Students will practice graphing and identifying characteristics of polynomial functions with this Mystery Code Activity. Characteristics include domain, range, relative maximum(s) and minimum(s), end behavior, increasing and decreasing interval(s), and zero(s), and multiplicity (tangent versus intersecting).

Students will need to graph 8 polynomial functions to complete this activity. Two graphs will require students to approximate the relative maximum and minimum. There are two versions included: one with the polynomial functions expanded and one with them written in factored form. Choose the version that works best for your students.

Characteristics of the functions are described on the Mystery Code sheet. Students choose the function that matches the description. Once they identify all the characteristics, there are directions at the bottom of the page to reveal the code. They can check this code with you.

I loved this activity! My students were so successful with comparing the different features of a polynomial functions. They continued to refer to this activity throughout the next week following it.

I find that any work that is created by All Things Algebra is effective in the mathematics classroom. I will almost always use her work to teach/reinforce skills in my classrooms!

—PAULA B.

I liked that students had to graph everything before going back and finding the code. It helped them to check their work, especially if they didn't get the correct answer. This was a very engaging assignment.
