Students will practice evaluating expressions given replacement values for variables with this coloring activity. There are 20 problems total, separated into two sets. Students simplify each expression, then look for matching answers between the columns. They color the shamrock according to their matching answers. This could also used as a partner activity in which Partner A completes the top and Partner B completes the bottom.
The types of problems include variable replacements with both positive and negative numbers. Absolute value is also included in the expressions. I intended for these to be more challenging, as I struggle to find more difficult examples in textbooks. I would recommend using this activity with advanced 6th-7th graders, or grades 8+.
