This fraction operations positive only activity is a fun, low-prep way for middle school math students to practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive fractions, including applications. This activity includes positive fractions only.
How It Works:
There are 9 stations with 9 problems at each station. Hang the problem cards and the solutions card side by side at each station (cutting the problem cards apart is optional). Working in groups of 3–4, students choose one problem to solve at each station, then look up their answer on the solutions card to reveal a piece of their story (who, doing what, with whom, where, when, etc.). Because each group’s story depends on the problems they choose, every group ends up with a different story to share, and students love seeing which of their teachers is the “star”!
This style of Math Lib is more difficult to grade than the classic one-story version, but you can informally assess as you walk around the room. You’ll hear great math conversations, and it’s the perfect time to ask students to walk you through how they solved a problem!
Station Topics:
- Station A – Adding Fractions
- Station B – Subtracting Fractions
- Station C – Multiplying Fractions
- Station D – Dividing Fractions
- Station E – Mixed Operations
- Station F – Mixed Operations
- Station G – Mixed Operations
- Station H – Application Problems
- Station I – Application Problems
Edit all story elements!
The stations solutions are given in a Microsoft Word document so you are able to change all story elements to personalize the story for your students.
