Students will practice factoring trinomials (when a > 1) with this Battleship Partner Activity. Each partner has a board with 36 binomials in which they choose 15 boxes to mark with a dry erase marker or cover with place chips. These are their “battleships”. Each partner also has a list of 18 trinomials in which they must factor. They choose one to factor, then read the binomials to their partner. If their partner has a “battleship” on one or both of these squares, they must remove it. They choose another problem and repeat. The partner who “sinks” their partner’s “battleships” first wins!

This was an incredible resource. My students had never played battleship, so we had to first learn how to play the game. It took us two class periods but gave them great practice on factoring and communicating. I will definitely be using this in the future.

My kiddos LOVED this activity, and they asked if I could find more like this for other content. I used this with my honors Algebra 1 class, and they love the competition with each other, and not only was this great for content learning, but it just brought out laughs and joy in the whole room. Did require a little background knowledge of the game (in terms of who has who's boards and what not), but luckily most of my students had played Battleship before and the ones who didn't were about to catch on.
