Students will practice evaluating expressions as they rotate through 10 stations with this “Math Lib” Activity.  The types of problems include variable replacements with both positive and negative numbers. Absolute value is also included in the expressions. I intended for these to be more challenging, as I struggle to find more difficult examples in textbooks. I would recommend using this activity with advanced 6th-7th graders, or 8th graders. The answer at each station will give them a piece to a story (who, doing what, with who, where, when, etc.).

This is a much more fun approach to multiple choice, and the students adore reading the story to the class. They get very excited to see which of their teachers is the “star” of the story.

Edit all story elements!

All slides are given in an editable format so you are free to personalize the story for your students. PowerPoint is required to edit. Only story elements can be changed, not the actual problems.

This activity includes a link to a Google Forms version of the activity. If you have already purchased this resource, please redownload for the update.

My students loved this activity. They competed to see which group could solve the mad lib first. It took teamwork, careful work and checking each other to make sure their answers agreed. They had so much fun and forgot that they were learning/reinforcing their math skills! :)

My students love Math Libs! I have bought a lot of these activities, and they never disappoint. These are great for students to do on their own or with a partner. I gave this to my 8th graders because they always struggle with evaluating expressions for some reason. This did help.

-HEATHER C.

This was so fun for my intervention class! Having them move around the room and being able to change the outcomes to something more familiar was really engaging for them and they were determined to get to the end to solve the riddle.
