This Writing Linear Equations Find Someone Who Activity gets students out of their seats while they practice writing equations in slope-intercept form given a graph, standard form, a point and slope, or two points. Students also write equations of lines parallel or perpendicular to a given line through a certain point, find the line of best fit from a table of values, and use it to estimate another outcome. There are 14 problems in all, and students trade papers with their classmates to complete them.
I distribute the Find Someone Who Activity to each student and first tell students to put their name on the paper, because they will be trading papers with their classmates many times. Then, they choose any one problem to do on their own to start. Then, they get up and find 13 other people to trade papers to complete the remaining problems. They sign their name on the problems they did. I walk around with my own paper and trade with them as well and encourage students to try different problems each time. This provides me with an opportunity to engage in math discussion with them individually.
