Students will practice solving multi-step equations (including those with no solution and infinitely many solutions), proportions, absolute value equations, and literal equations with this “Find Someone Who” activity.

Note: There is a second version of this activity included that does not contain absolute value equations. Choose the version that works best for your students.

I distribute the Find Someone Who Activity and first tell students to put their name on the paper, because they will be trading papers with their classmates many times. Then, they choose any one problem to do on their own to start. Then, they get up and find 15 other people to trade papers with to complete the remaining problems. They sign their name on the problems they did. I walk around with my own paper and trade with them as well and encourage students to try different problems each time. This gives me an opportunity to engage in math discussion with them individually.

Once all is completed, they sit back down in their groups and compare answers and make changes if necessary. Then, we go over the problems as a class.

My students loved getting a chance to get up and move around the classroom anything that involves interaction works with my students.

—DEANNA P.

I like the moving around element. These "find someone who" activities are fun, too, because they trick the kids into working more (since they're not seeing all their completed work on one page, they don't realize how much they're doing!).

—JENNIFER W.

Nice activity to have students practice solving equations while moving around the room.
