Students will practice solving quadratic equations by completing the square using this “Triples Activity.” With 36 cards, students will match 12 sets of three cards: one showing a quadratic equation (in any form), one showing the equation in completed square form, and one showing its solutions.
*This activity includes quadratics in which a = 1 only. Both rational and irrational solutions are included with all irrational solutions written in simplest form.
Cards 1–12 show quadratic equations in various forms. Students must find the matching equation in completed square form from Cards 13–24, and then the corresponding solutions from Cards 25–36. They may show their work on notebook paper or on the back of the cards. Once all matches are complete, students will have 12 correct “triples.”
I have my students staple their completed triples together and place them in a zip-lock bag for grading. They simply write their names on the bag with a Sharpie. An answer key is provided to help you quickly check that the matches are correct.
