This free multi-step equations relay race has students working in teams of four to solve a chain of four equations. The problems include the distributive property and variables on both sides. Two versions are included.
How It Works:
Put students in groups of four and number them 1 to 4. Person #1 solves Problem 1, then passes the paper to Person #2, who substitutes that answer into Problem 2 and solves it, and so on. Teammates can help and coach, but only the person whose turn it is can write on the paper. The first group to bring you the paper with all four correct answers wins!
It takes longer than students expect. They want to rush, but they quickly learn that taking their time and checking their work is the best strategy, since one mistake carries through the rest of the race.
This relay works very well with Algebra 1 Unit 2: Multi-Step Equations & Inequalities or Pre-Algebra Unit 3: Equations & Inequalities.
