Students will practice solving systems of equations by substitution or elimination with this relay race activity. There are four relays included, each with 4 problems. Versions 1 and 2 require that students substitute the x-coordinate from the previous answer into the next, and versions 3 and 4 require that the students substitute the y-coordinate from the previous answer into the next to solve.
In groups of four, distribute a relay to each student. They all begin on problem #1 and solve the system using substitution or elimination. They rotate papers, substitute the x-coordinate or y-coordinate from the previous problem into the next, then solve. This requires that they check over the work. They keep rotating until all relays are completed. I have found the relays to be incredibly beneficial in my classroom as they stress the importance of accuracy and not rushing through.
This can also be used as independent work or as a warm-ups/exit tickets.
