Students will apply their understanding of permutations and combinations to determine the number of possible outcomes in a variety of scenarios with this Cross Number Puzzle. The activity focuses on identifying whether each situation represents a permutation or a combination and calculating each value accordingly. Most problems are straightforward with no restrictions; however, one problem involves rearranging letters in a word with repeated letters.
This activity is similar to a crossword puzzle, but instead of filling in letters, students fill in numbers. There are both Across and Down problems. Students solve each problem and record their answers in the puzzle accordingly. The puzzle is self-checking, allowing students to spot and correct errors if their answers do not fit.
There are 24 problems included. This activity can be completed independently or with a partner. When working in pairs, one partner can complete the Across problems while the other works on the Down problems.
