This order of operations activity provides middle school students with engaging practice simplifying numerical expressions using the order of operations. Problems include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and grouping symbols with both positive and negative integers, and they cover a range of difficulty.
How It Works:
Give each student the pyramid template and the set of problems. Students simplify each expression, write the solutions in the boxes, then cut out the boxes and paste them onto the template so that each solution is the sum of the two solutions directly above it. Since every answer has to add up correctly in the pyramid, students can check their own work as they go.
Ways to Use It:
This pyramid sum puzzle works well as independent practice, partner work, a review before a quiz or test, or a low-prep sub plan during your order of operations or integers unit.
