This Tangent Lines to Circles Find Someone Who Activity gets students out of their seats while they practice determining whether a segment is tangent to a circle and solving for segment lengths involving tangent lines. Students will need to know the Pythagorean Theorem, how to solve multi-step equations, and how to square binomials for these problems. There are 12 problems in all, and students trade papers with their classmates to complete them.
I distribute the Find Someone Who Activity to each student and first tell students to put their name on the paper, because they will be trading papers with their classmates many times. Then, they choose any one problem to do on their own to start. Then, they get up and find 11 other people to trade papers to complete the remaining problems. They sign their name on the problems they did. I walk around with my own paper and trade with them as well and encourage students to try different problems each time. This provides me with an opportunity to engage in math discussion with them individually.
