This Slope and Graphing Linear Equations Find Someone Who Activity gets students out of their seats while they practice finding the slope of a line from a graph or two ordered pairs, identifying the slope formula, slope-intercept form, and standard form, converting equations from standard form to slope-intercept form, and graphing linear equations. Graphing problems include equations in slope-intercept form, equations in standard form (by converting or by using x– and y-intercepts), and vertical and horizontal lines. There are 14 problems in all, and students trade papers with their classmates to complete them.
I distribute the Find Someone Who Activity to each student and first tell students to put their name on the paper, because they will be trading papers with their classmates many times. Then, they choose any one problem to do on their own to start. Then, they get up and find 13 other people to trade papers to complete the remaining problems. They sign their name on the problems they did. I walk around with my own paper and trade with them as well and encourage students to try different problems each time. This provides me with an opportunity to engage in math discussion with them individually.
