This unit contains the following topics:

• Recognizing a direct variation given ordered pairs, equations, and graphs.
• Identifying the constant in a direct variation.
• Solving for missing values given a direct variation relationship.
• Recognizing an inverse variation given ordered pairs, equations, and graphs.
• Identifying the constant in an inverse variation.
• Solving for missing values given an inverse variation relationship.
• Direct and Inverse Variation Application Problems – solving for missing values, and identifying the constant of variation.

If following along with my Algebra 1 Curriculum, I typically teach direct and inverse variation between Unit 4 (Linear Equations) and Unit 5 (Systems of Equations and Inequalities.)

This unit does not contain activities.

This is the guided notes, homework assignments, and test only.  For suggested activities to go with this unit, check out the ATA Activity Alignment Guides.

License Terms:

This purchase includes a single non-transferable license, meaning it is for one teacher only for personal use in their classroom and can not be passed from one teacher to another.  No part of this resource is to be shared with colleagues or used by an entire grade level, school, or district without purchasing the proper number of licenses.  A transferable license is not available for this resource.

What standards is this curriculum aligned to?
Because the standards in each state can differ, it is impossible to create a one-size fits all curriculum. Download a complete list of topics included in this curriculum to compare to your own curriculum and standards.

What format are the files in?
All files are in a PDF format; however, the PowerPoint versions of the assessments are included so you can easily make multiple versions or customize to fit your needs. Equation Editor (usually built in to PowerPoint) is required to edit these files.  If your Equation Editor is incompatible with mine, simply delete my equation and insert your own. Only assessments are editable.

Will I have access to materials if they are updated?
Yes! If any changes are made to the materials, simply login and redownload from your purchases.

Are answer keys included?
Yes!

Are videos included?
Yes, links to videos (on YouTube) of each lesson in the unit are included. Videos were created by fellow teachers for their students using the guided notes and shared in March 2020 when schools closed with no notice.  Please watch through first before sharing with your students. Many teachers still use these in emergency substitute situations.

My school uses Gina's curriculum for Algebra 1, but the previous Algebra 1 teacher had not taught this unit. I purchase it, and like all of her content, it was very well done. I love her notes outlines that help students take organized notes, and there are enough example problems to do together and have some for students to complete as part of our classwork. Great curriculum for direct and inverse variation.

-ARMINDA T.

Loved this resource! my students usually got very confused as to what "direct variation" meant in different contexts, and the notes were great! there was lots of practice with both graphs, tables, and word problems that helped make the necessary connections to linear functions.

-JULIE H.

This was a great quick resource to include after our unit in linear equations. The students were able to easily make connections between graphing linear equations and direct/inverse variation. Thank you for this resource!
